Today, my Dominican builder, Ramon, and his son, Ramoncito, are working on some things in preparation for the work Northwoods will be doing the next couple weeks. The construction teams from Northwoods will be preparing and pouring a large cement roof for Buenas Nuevas II, a church in Cristo Rey. It will be a big job that will consist of carpentry the first week in order to pour the roof the second week.
One major problem in the Dominican Republic and something you are continuely thinking about, is thievery. I am always looking over my shoulder in the market, keeping every door locked at all times, making sure I know everyone that comes near the guesthouse facility, preoccupied with materials at the worksites, etc. When Ramon said that for more security, we would store the $4,000 US of wood I bought for framing the roof of the church at the Guesthouse, rather than the church, I didn't argue a bit.
The next preventative measure we took to make sure the wood didn't walk away was to paint a couple letters on it so if it showed up somewhere else in the future, it could be claimed. Sounds like a great idea, huh? I decided to have "USA" written on every piece of lumber in huge, bright letters.
An hour later, after much of the wood was painted, Shannon realized that "USA", actually reads "Usa" in spanish, which means "Use". I basically had a flashing sign written on every sheet of plywood saying"Feel free to take this wood at any time. I don't need it anymore. You are more than welcome to use it for your own enjoyment."
On a side not, the other day, I was talking to Dr. Canario about the potential building of a new clinic over the next couple years. He has an architecht and engineer, of whom I don't know, doing most of the preliminary drawings and planning. I meant to say "Yo quiero conocer el arquitecto y ingeniero." "I want to know (meet) the architect and engineer." I actually said, "Yo quiero cocinar el arquitecto y ingeniero." "I want to cook the architect and engineer." I will never get this language.
