I was running on the track yesterday, a morning ritual when we don't have teams after lifting weights at hard body gym, and this Dominican came up and ran beside me. This isn't the first time a Dominican attempted to race Shannon or me on the track, so I didn't think too much about it. The only difference between this moment and similar ones in the past was that he was much bigger than me.
He was about 20 years old and looked like he was 6'7", 200 lbs. I am typically the biggest person everywhere I go down here, so when he told me he was under contract with the New York Yankees, I didn't hesitate to believe him. I was confused when he told me he was on vacation and didn't have to head back to the States until May, given that spring training starts next month. Naturally, I had some questions:
Why was he in San Juan right now?
Why didn't he have to report to the team until May?
Why was he so big?
This morning, I googled his name, Rony Bautista, and all my questions were answered:
MLB.com's article was titled: "Yanks' Bautista one of three suspended: Minor Leaguer tests positive for a metabolite, out 50 games".
He had been suspended three days earlier for doping. I should have known.
