Recent Random Funnies

So life in a foreign country will always keep you laughing if you keep a good attitude.  Things happen to us here that would never happen in the States (sorry Dominicans, but if you come to the US you'll laugh at lots of things that WE do!).

Funny #1:  We have a hot water toilet.  Yes, the bowl will burn you if you touch it, and no, it doesn't feel good to sweat while sitting on it because you're already so hot all the time!

Funny #2:  I have a water burn on my stomach from last night.  Even though I've drained water successfully from pots of boiling green beans every week for the past two years, it finally got me and it hurt pretty bad!  I now have a strange looking bubble/scar right below my belly button that just makes me smile and shake my head when I look at it.

Funny #3:  We get laughed at because we both wear helmets on our moped

Funny #4:  I saw one of our Dominican workers nearly choke to death this morning when he had his very first taste of black coffee (Dominican coffee is loaded with sugar and cream).

Funny #5:  All the neighborhood kids still think we are the children of Rod and Sandy (previous Guesthouse hosts) and will say to each other with reverence, "Look, the son of Bra" (they could never say "Rod" correctly).

Funny #6:  We roasted a pig over a fire in our backyard last week and no one gave a second thought about it or had questions as to how you prepare it.

Funny #7:  I think I've finally been around enough tarantulas to be cured of my fears.  The other morning I actually swept one out of the kitchen with a broom all by myself (sorry, not Dominican enough to smash them with large rocks yet).

Funny #8:  Watching Dominican dogs sniff and ignore dog treats brought for them by American dog-lovers.

Funny #9:  One of our Dominican workers thought Ranch dressing was milk and poured himself a glass to drink at lunch last week.

Funny #10:  Joe stepped in a pile of sludge up to his ankle (while wearing flip flops) in the market yesterday and had to use sewer water to wash it off. Further washing which included soap took place when he got home.
